Why Do People Wear Wedding Rings On Fourth Finger?
I like to wear rings in my middle finger, but have often wondered why wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger! Though fashion has crept in dominating customs and practices, a few traditional customs still stand out to be special and unique. One such tradition that hasn’t changed over ages is wearing unique wedding rings on the fourth finger! Let’s mull on the significance of wearing wedding rings on the fourth finger and how the tradition evolved.
Traditionally, in western cultures, wedding rings are worn on the ring finger and this custom evolved during the late 11th century. Annulus Pronubis, a Roman, started this practice during his betrothal ceremony. In the Jewish tradition, the groom places the ring on the index finger, because they consider it as the most prominent of all fingers. Then once the ceremony is over, the ring is moved to the ring finger.
In a few European countries brides, wore wedding rings on left hand before the wedding and moved it to the right hand during the ceremony. During the medieval times in Europe, the wedding ring was first placed on the index finger, then middle finger, and finally on the ring finger on the left hand. Shifting the wedding ring among the three fingers represented the trinity (Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.)
Though a number of customs prevail even today, wearing wedding rings on the fourth finger is found to be special and romantic. This is done because it is believed that the vein (vena amoris) in the left ring finger is directly connected to the heart. Though this romantic story doesn’t have a firm background to validate its concept, it is still believed, and followed by many in their weddings as a gesture of love and affection.
