Engagement Ring Price – How Much Should You Spend?
When in the market for an engagement ring, the question of how much you should spend will inevitably come up. Although there is no definitive answer, there are some guidelines you can use to help you decide on a budget. This article will address some of the things you can consider to determine how expensive the ring should be.
One of the benchmarks people commonly use is two or three months worth of the man’s salary. They say this is a good starting point for figuring out how much to spend. This can be helpful as a guide, but it’s important to consider your individual situation as the most important determinant.
For instance, if the scale above says you should spend about ten thousand dollars on the ring (5k per month x 2 months) but you’ve been saving for a couple years and have an extra five thousand dollars you want to spend then by all means buy a more expensive engagement ring. The key is to use the recommendations as guidelines and not as hard and fast decision makers.
The last thing you want to do when buying an engagement ring is spend more than you can comfortably afford because what happens then is you start off your lives together with a mountain of debt. You want to put yourself in the most favorable financial situation you can, so spend what you can afford and nothing more. The temptation to get a huge, expensive ring will be there, but you have to control that urge to avoid getting over your head in debt.
The engagement ring price does not reflect how much you love your girlfriend and should not be looked at that way. The sooner you understand that she’ll be happy with a ring, any ring, because of what it symbolizes more than anything, the sooner you’ll be able to go shopping with a large burden off your chest. Get a ring that she’ll be happy with, but do it with financial responsibility.
For some guys, the size and price of the ring is a reflection of their manhood. It takes a bigger man to spend what he can afford with the intention of being in a better position to financially support his soon-to-be wife and eventual family. Don’t let the pressure of keeping up with the high rollers or impressing others determine what you should spend on an engagement ring. Don’t be cheap, but there’s no need to clear out the savings either.
