Men and Their Engagement Rings
The charge is not being led by gay men who wish to have the same milestones as the straights but by the straights themselves. No doubt the “queer eye” will certainly influence the straight guy. Gay men have undeniable fashion flair.
The men’s engagement ring is still worn on the left hand but with very much more masculine designs than the traditional solitaire. Platinum and Titanium are popular metal choices but remember Titanium is not a malleable metal and any stones are usually held in by tension. The ring size adjustment is therefore very limited.
Gold in white, yellow and rose is probably the most widely used. Sometimes mono tone, sometimes two tone and sometimes three tone. Imaginative blending of these gold alloys can make very attractive rings.
Another good blend is gold and bronze. This can have very striking and masculine appearances
Textured effects like embossing and other as well as surface effects such as plaits, weaves is also very popular.
Silver for this type of ring is not a good idea as it does tarnish.
When choosing a ring bear in mind it must be rugged enough to withstand a fair amount to punishment, especially if the wearer has an active life style of some sort.
Generally speaking big diamonds or other stones are not favoured. They would be a bit questionable in their ability to withstand a bit of hard use. Small diamonds or may be birthstones are often incorporated with very good effect.
After marriage two rings on the same finger as the ladies wear them may be a bit too much for some, so one answer is to have two rings, both fairly narrow and then after marriage have them soldered together to form a single ring. Another is to follow the Irish and German practise which is to have the same ring but to wear it differently for engagement and marriage.
The claddagh ring lends itself brilliantly to this, being worn heart down for engagement heart up on marriage. Its design of a pair of hands holding a heart topped by a crown is very evocative of his marriage commitment as well.
